LYRICS - Holding It All

Holding It All

by Charity Kahn

the veins of earth grow tired
her love a starving fire
who are we to turn and see this late
all systems break and bend
communication scrambled
we watch from the comfort
of our greed and hate

holding it all
as we fall

children come with me
I have a story for thee
and seeds from all the flowers
on your mother’s grave
oh we have failed you so
may the river carry you on
to where the sunrise dries your eyes
you must be strong and brave

holding it all
as we fall

all my poets say god is shining
from the cracks and through the dying
all my sages say love is flowing
always moving coming going
but all I see is loss and leaving
end of earth and all her beings
praying fighting craving demanding
to know this isn’t only ending

if I could turn time ‘round
and know what I know now
I’d stop to worship every pale moon rise
and every morning dew
and every birdsong too
but mostly dear the weight
of your warm hand in mine

holding it all
as we fall

all my poets say god is shining
from the cracks and through the dying
all my sages say love is flowing
always moving coming going
but all my sisters say life is quickening
in the womb of our undoing
praying fighting sustaining proclaiming
no, this isn’t only ending

sitting here with you
watching silence fall
another day sighs away
and we’re still right here
you are a precious thing
beyond imagining
how wide the heart can open
when there’s no more fear
