LYRICS - Witness

Witness

by Charity Kahn

living on the edge of a leaf
at the end of a tiny branch
faintest little whisper of the wind
and I’m gone
trying to stay still and strong for you
and calm and dependable

but the rain born deep inside my bones
falls glittering
blinding through our flesh
the light is real
down in the shadows lies our dream
fast asleep while the world burns dirty

but there’s still kindness
compassion, forgiveness
and maybe there’s nothin' left
to do now but listen

if I could melt into the earth
and become her heart
crack and break wide open
come apart
I’d send out a song of truth and might
to wrap around this darkening night

oh I’d sing a gorgeous story
of all that might have been
if all the beings had found a way
to invite this love in
and embrace each other’s pain
heal the wounds and receive the rain

but there’s still kindness
compassion, forgiveness
and maybe there’s nothin' else left
to do here but witness

maybe there’s still hope
maybe there’s an end to fear
maybe we’ll find comfort safety
and all we yearn for
and maybe we’ll realize
there's no other behind those eyes
